A remote 10th-century capital, a hilltop shrine and Angkor's great jungle temple.

Leave early and head north to Koh Ker, briefly the capital of the Khmer empire, where the seven-tiered pyramid of Prasat Thom rises from the forest. Nearby Perng Kamnou adds a quieter hilltop site.

On the return you explore Beng Mealea, a temple the size of Angkor Wat still wrapped in trees and fallen stone.
